Clean Down Under

Underwater trash pickup

Collecting trash from beneath the waves.

Clean Down Under (CDU) raises awareness about a hidden hazard—the litter accumulating on the ocean floor along the Carlsbad coastline and in the nearby lagoons.

With the assistance of state and private dive teams, the program provides an opportunity for individuals and organizations to collect the trash hiding below the water’s surface and reveal to the public the damaging effects it has on marine life and the ecosystem.

Working closely with its community partners—NRG West, Carlsbad Sea Life Aquarium, The San Diego Regional Aquatic Lifesaving Emergency Response Team (SDRALERT), and California State Parks—CDU plans its first dive in open waters off Carlsbad’s Tamarack Beach in late May 2012. The collected debris will be weighed and displayed at the Carlsbad Beach Fest on June 9, 2012.
